Improving access to public transit
in Michigan’s rural communities

Map of Michigan highlighting service areas for the Advancing Rural Mobility Program (ARMP). Counties are outlined with three categories: ARMP participants (outlined in purple), emerging partners (gray with diagonal hatching), and Phase 1 SMART-funded participants (red with dotted shading). Participating and funded areas are concentrated across northern Lower Michigan—including counties such as Wexford, Crawford, Ogemaw, Iosco, Clare, Gladwin, and Alpena—and parts of the Upper Peninsula, including Marquette County. Additional transit agencies are labeled throughout the map, such as Cadillac/Wexford Transportation Authority, Thunder Bay Transportation Authority, and Straits Regional Ride. Emerging partner counties appear in southeast Michigan’s Thumb region and parts of southwest Michigan. A legend, north arrow, and scale bar (0–20 miles) are included. The map emphasizes expanding rural transit access and coordination through ARMP statewide.

Program Overview

Leveraging Fleet Data – June 17, 2026, 1-2 p.m. EST

The Advancing Rural Mobility project’s trip planner tool aims to enhance transportation access and efficiencies in rural areas. To meet the unique needs of Michigan’s rural communities, the trip planner utilizes partner transit agencies service data to display possible trip planning options. Transit riders will benefit from increased awareness of available transportation options, helping improve access to essential services, reduce isolation, and ultimately foster greater connectivity and quality of life.
